Updated: Jan 12, 2022

If you are equipping your boat or a different marine vehicle with a stereo system, it better be water resistant. While you never want to completely submerge the speakers in water, speakers on a boat will inevitably get wet. Splashing wake will spray water all over your boat, and fog, rain, or mist are a constant. It is obvious that marine audio and boat speakers need to be weather resistant, but what is unclear is how exactly do boat speakers work? At Stereo Depot, we specialize in marine audio installation, and we share how to make boat speakers water resistant. Manufacturers make crucial changes during the design process to make speakers water resistant, using complex design innovations to keep your speaker’s safe from the elements without sacrificing any sound quality. There are three main aspects of the speaker that needs to be altered in order to make them water resistant, with major changes occurring in the frame and grilles, the diaphragms, and the casing of the speaker. Stainless Steel, Aluminum, or Brass Frames and Grilles Normal speakers usually use steel frames and grilles. While this is perfectly acceptable for indoor speakers, if the speakers are outside or near water, these frames and grilles can easily get rusty, leading to corrosion. Water resistant speakers make sure to only use stainless steel, brass, or aluminum to prevent rusting and damage. Water Resistant Speakers Have Mylar Diaphragms The diaphragm is an essential part of any speaker, helping the speaker to produce sound. Most speakers have a diaphragm made of paper, which is fine for indoor speakers. However, the paper diaphragm is very sensitive to humidity, and being in water or sunshine can lead to long-term damage. Water resistant speakers use much more durable mylar for the diaphragm. Tough, Weatherproof Speaker Casings It is essential to protect the inner components of a speaker. If any moisture or other foreign agent finds its way into the inner components, the speaker can have immediate issues. That is why water resistant speakers feature a tough casing with a polypropylene finish, keeping the speakers safe from water damage. The casing and cabinetry can also be sealed with an airtight Teflon finish for further protection.

WATER RESISTANT SPEAKERS ARE THOROUGHLY TESTED Once all of these measures have been taken to make speakers water resistant, they are then put through a series of tests to make sure the speakers can survive even the toughest elements. After the speakers have been put through a circuit of tests, they are finally ready to be installed into your boat!
